Get More Involved

get involved

We have a treasured team of volunteers at Holy Rood, some of whom come for an hour or two each week, others for a season or a year.

There are a number of opportunities for volunteers to become involved:

  • helping to serve refreshments during the day;
  • supporting the hospitality team;
  • collecting guests from the station;
  • joining the gardening team;
  • supporting our maintenance programme;
  • sharing skills in administration or finance.

All community members and volunteers need to be down to earth with an open and inclusive approach to people.  We are rooted within a gentle Christian ethos and welcome people of all backgrounds, religious and philosophical views.  We start each day in contemplative prayer, a space for reflection and connection which is accessible to people of all faiths or none.

Most of our volunteering opportunities are subject to relevant Criminal Records checks and applicants must be able to evidence that they have the right to work in the UK.  Please talk, in confidence, to the Co-ordinating Chaplain if this requirement raises any concerns for you.

Current Opportunities:

We are actively looking for people with financial skills, perhaps someone who is looking for something a bit gentler than the commercial world, the chance to use your skills to benefit others?

We are also on the look-out for people with the time and skills to help our applications to grant-making bodies.

We have some wonderful cooks here already but would be delighted if someone local would like to add their skills into the mix.  We serve a wholesome evening meal at 6pm every day and are looking to develop the team at weekends.  Might you be able to prepare a meal for about a dozen people a couple of times a week?

If any of these opportunities sound interesting to you, please send your CV and a covering letter to enquiries@holyroodhouse.org.uk

Volunteers and Placements:

We are always pleased to hear from people who are looking for placements in a variety of areas:

  • trainee counsellors;
  • social care students;
  • theological students;
  • gardeners;
  • caterers;
  • or young people looking for work experience.

There may be the opportunity for a residential placement or you may be looking at a few sessions a week for a short period of time. Just let us know a bit about yourself and what you’re interested in.  Email: enquiries@holyroodhouse.org.uk.

Taken from written placement assessments:

Trainee Care Worker:
‘In speaking with visitors… I learned how very important the care provided by Holy Rood House is in the healing process of individuals …. I also learned, arguably the most important lesson of my placement, that a care setting reflects the character of its staff. Without exception, the staff members of Holy Rood House were warm, kind, cheerful, helpful, caring and dedicated. Their enthusiasm was matched by their commitment to the care, comfort and recovery of the visitors there. They dedicated themselves to the task of providing the best possible experience for the people who used the service provided by them. The environment provided by them was rich in consideration and compassion which gave the Centre a palpable aura of peace and tranquillity and made my visit there not only informative and hugely beneficial for the purpose of my role with the PCT, but a valuable experience for me on many personal levels.’

Social Care and Nursing:
‘There are many reasons to come here, for relaxation, for rest, for company or alternatively to be left alone. The guests may have suffered recent bereavement, be recuperating from an accident, have a life changing event which they may be struggling to cope with or they may just need some ‘time out’. I found all the staff friendly and helpful and very welcoming. As the ward that I work on is such a busy place and my home life is quite hectic the quiet was initially slightly unnerving but soon became very calming. I would imagine even after a short stay the memories would stay with you for some time and hopefully offer comfort when needed.’

Theology & Religious Studies Student:
‘I found the community progressive with an ‘organic’ liturgy ‘permeate(ing) the entire work of the community – everything that is done is an act of worship.’

All of our placement opportunities are subject to relevant Criminal Records checks and applicants must be able to evidence that they have the right to work in the UK.  Please talk, in confidence, to the Co-ordinating Chaplain if this requirement raises any concerns for you.
