About Us

We are a small, inclusive, residential community offering a genuine welcome to individuals and groups, throughout the year.  You might choose to come for a short break or to help you avoid a crisis. You might be interested in one of our retreats or events or to take some time out for a Quiet Day.  Holy Rood might be just what you are looking for at the moment so read on to find out more.

This place is a comma in our very busy lives
which allows us to pause, draw breath
and see each other as whole people.

Quotes from our guests

Garden

Here at Holy Rood you are welcome exactly as you are.

There are many reasons why people come here: for peace and quiet, to read or use your imagination in our creative arts room; for a chance to enjoy the open space of our garden or walk along the stream across the road; to step aside from our busy lives or enjoy the company of others for a while; to enjoy the market town of Thirsk or the quiet garden which seems to be miles from anywhere.

For some people this is where the mask can come off, where mental health, anxiety or depression can be named and known.  Holy Rood can be the place to come to when everything feels a bit too much.

Get in touch if you would like to come and stay.

This house holds the spirit and carries the burden.

Banner of both houses

Holy Rood House and Juliet House overlook the Hambleton Hills in the Vale of Mowbray, nestled in the picturesque village of Sowerby, a few minutes’ walk from the market town of Thirsk.  The houses are set within their own beautiful gardens with chickens, goats and a tortoise.  There are a variety of quiet spaces within the houses and grounds including the tucked away Chapel of Sophia, the simple Labyrinth, our well-stocked Library and a Creative Arts room.
